Paddling Canoes and Kayaks at Isle Royale

There are many opportunities for canoeing and kayaking at Isle Royale National Park. You can rent a canoe or a kayak for a few hours at Rock Harbor (Click This Link) or Windigo (Click this link) . You can also go on multi-day paddling trips on inland lakes and on Lake Superior (using your own watercraft that you transport to Isle Royale upon a ferry). The National Park service makes the following recommendation regarding canoes and kayaks in open water: "Canoes should be at least 15' long to navigate open water. Sea kayaks should be at least 15'8" to 19" for open water. Recreational kayaks are not recommended."

NOTE: THERE ARE ADDITIONAL FEES TO TRANSPORT A CANOE OR KAYAK TO ISLE ROYALE ON THE FERRIES.

I am aware of at least three outfitters on the mainland who have (at least in the past) rented canoes and kayaks to people for the individuals to personally transport to Isle Royale aboard the various ferries (again paying an additional transportation fee to the ferry companies.)  The rental places for canoes and kayaks include:
  • Bear Track Outfitting in Grand Marais, MN (Click the Link)
  • Sylvania Outfitters in Watersmeet, MI (Click the Link)
  • Grand Portage (MN) Isle Royale Transportation Lines knows of places to rent canoes and kayaks (Click the Link)

Here is a link to the National Park Service page regarding canoeing and kayaking at Isle Royale.  (Click Link Here).

There are also services that offer guided paddling trips at Isle Royale.  For a list of the various Isle Royale guided services--...PLEASE CLICK HERE.

Jim DuFresne's book, "Isle Royale National Park: Foot Trails and Water Routes (Fifth Edition)" has good information regarding paddling at Isle Royale. (Click the book title for a link to information about purchasing the book).
